These were chefs, not politicians. Unfortunately, however, locally-produced farm food has become a huge political issue in recent times.

Back in 2011 the Obama administration decided the FDA should prosecute Amish raw milk farmer Dan Allgyer in Pennsylvania, carrying out a sting operation against him and putting him out of business. His crime was supplying raw milk to a private food club a few miles away, but across the Pennsylvania state border. The incident prompted a demonstration in Washington D.C.

FDA Approves a Dangerous New Antidepressant—for Hot Flashes!

The FDA has approved the first non-hormonal treatment for hot flashes associated with menopause. The drug is paroxetine mesylate (marketed as Brisdelle). Paroxetine, an SSRI, is the active ingredient in two drugs for depression and other psychiatric disorders, Paxil and Pexeva. What is not mentioned is that the FDA’s Reproductive Health Drugs Advisory Committee voted 10 to 4 that the overall risk-benefit profile of the drug did not support approval—that the benefits over placebo were “minimal,” and that all of the severe side effects associated with SSRIs, such as suicidal thoughts and osteoporosis, outweigh the minor benefits.

The dairy industry is an important part of Wisconsin’s economy, its culture, and its future. Today the state has about 12,000 dairy farms, but each year 500 of those farms go out of business.

The average age of farmers is 57 years old and many of these farmers do not have an identified successor. Meanwhile, aspiring dairy farmers face significant barriers to farm ownership. If farm loss continues at the current rate, the dairy industry and the rural communities that depend on it could be decimated in a generation.

Dairy Grazing Apprenticeship—the first accredited Apprenticeship for farming in the nation—was specifically created to address this challenge.

France Launches Long-term Study on GMO Health Risks, Ends GMO Field Trials

The research department of the General Commission for Sustainable Development (CGDD) Department of Ecology issued a call for the establishment of a consortium under the research program Risk’OGM, a national research program on the environmental and health risks of GMOs. “The purpose of this call for the creation of a consortium is to investigate the health effects of long-term consumption of GMOs,” announced the ministry, which added that the grant to the consortium will be “in the order of 2.5 million euros.”

Meanwhile, France’s last-remaining experimental open field trial of GMOs in France has been stopped. The National Institute of Agronomic Research (INRA) ended the trial by destroying 1000 GM poplars that have grown since 1995 in Saint-Cyr-en-Val, near Orléans (Loiret), a research site of 1300 square meters.

Antacid Medications Linked to Heart Attacks

Proton pump inhibiters (PPI’s) are widely prescribed antacid medications and they work by poisoning the stomach’s proton pump. The end result of PPI use is to inhibit stomach acid secretion. Researchers report that an in-vitro and in-vivo study of PPI’s found they caused reduced nitric oxide levels (NO). NO is produced in the body to promote vasodilation. Any substance that blocks NO production may result in constriction of blood vessels which would increase the risk for heart disease.

Drug Companies Plan to Use Compounding Bill to Eliminate Competition

S.959, the Senate compounding pharmacy bill, will likely shut off access to important medications like bioavailable estriol and time-released natural thyroid. Special interests in the pharmaceutical industry would try to use the call for federal regulation of compounding pharmacies to outlaw compounded estriol and thyroid and replace them with standard drugs. Compounded, bioidentical estriol became popular in the first place because the standard drug used for the same purpose was proven to be dangerous, a risk for both heart disease and cancer. It would be understandable that the drug companies would want this huge market back.

Bees dying by the millions

Local beekeepers are finding millions of their bees dead just after corn was planted here in the last few weeks. Dave Schuit, who has a honey operation in Elmwood, lost 600 hives, a total of 37 million bees.

“Once the corn started to get planted our bees died by the millions,” Schuit said. He and many others, including the European Union, are pointing the finger at a class of insecticides known as neonicotinoids, manufactured by Bayer CropScience Inc. used in planting corn and some other crops.
