Report: Diapers and Menstrual Pads Laced with Toxic Chemicals

A new report highlighted by Environmental Health News demonstrates that most diapers and menstrual pads contain volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and phthalates, endangering millions of babies and seniors who may be absorbing these chemicals through the genitalia. Congress and the FDA must take action to protect these populations. The study came about as a result of an investigation and class action lawsuit in South Korea after thousands of women claimed that new sanitary pads were causing menstrual problems and irregularities. The scientists tested a handful of diaper and menstrual pad brands for the presence of VOCs and phthalates, though they don’t name the brands. The study’s authors concluded, “The physical location of the exposure site, the high absorption rate of the genitalia for chemicals, and the long-term exposure period demand a thorough investigation on the potential impact of the exposure to VOCs and phthalates.” All four brands of diapers and all eleven brands of menstrual pads tested positive for at least two phthalates. Two brands of menstrual pads contained VOCs, along with all four diaper brands.

FDA Committee Chair: “Congress is Owned by Pharma”

Dr. Raeford Brown is a pediatric anesthesia specialist at the UK Kentucky Children’s Hospital. He also chairs the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Committee on Analgesics and Anesthetics. Dr. Brown has been openly critical of the FDA and their lack of oversight on the pharmaceutical industry, claiming "Congress is owned by pharma.” His comments were recently reported by Adriana Belmonte at Yahoo Finance. "Pharmaceutical companies are under the spotlight with congressional hearings on the cost of drug prices and allegations of the industry’s role in the opioid crisis. Dr. Raeford Brown, a pediatric anesthesia specialist at the UK Kentucky Children’s Hospital and chair of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Committee on Analgesics and Anesthetics, has been openly critical of big pharma and the lack of proper oversight from the FDA. Despite many politicians, particularly declared presidential candidates, beginning to speak out against big pharma, Brown does not think that anything will come out of it 'because Congress is owned by pharma.'" The article documents how pharmaceutical companies are making significant financial contributions to politicians and political candidates. Statistics are based on OpenSecrets, a website operated by the nonpartisan Center for Responsive Politics, which tracks money in U.S. politics. “The pharmaceutical industry pours millions of dollars into the legislative branch every single year,” he told Yahoo Finance. “In 2016, they put $100 million into the elections. That’s a ton of money.” Dr. Brown went on to say: “I’m really much more concerned because Congress is supposed to have oversight for the FDA. If the FDA isn’t going to hold pharma accountable, and Congress is getting paid to not hold pharma accountable, then it really doesn’t matter who the president is because it’s really about Congress.”

Bayer Loses Billions as 2nd Jury Determines RoundUp Weed Killer Causes Cancer

Bayer AG has suffered its second major legal defeat after purchasing Monsanto Co. and inheriting its controversial herbicide, RoundUp, the world's most popular weedkiller. The active ingredient in RoundUp, glyphosate, has been linked to cancer and other health problems, while Bayer and Monsanto, along with the U.S. EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) have denied any links. Earlier this week, a second jury in California has determined that a man who sprayed RoundUp on his property for decades is responsible for his non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. This recent defeat in court now opens up the door to another 11,200 cases pending against Bayer for harm allegedly caused by glyphosate. Settling these cases could cost Bayer billions more. Meanwhile, the evidence for harm caused by glyphosate continues to pile up. A study just published in The BMJ links pesticides and herbicides, including the widely used glyphosate, during prenatal and infant exposure to an increased rate of autism. The study was conducted in the Central Valley of California, home to the world's largest agricultural area.

4th Child Develops Cancer after California Elementary School Cell Tower Installed

Four students and three teachers have reportedly been diagnosed with cancer at an elementary school in Ripon, California, after a cell tower was installed directly on the school grounds about 3 years ago. After the 4th child was diagnosed with cancer earlier this month (March, 2019), some parents reportedly pulled their students from school, and about 200 parents of the school's 400 students gathered at a City Council meeting last week. They want the cell tower removed from the school. The school district reportedly has a 25-year lease contract with Sprint, and receives $2000.00 a month to have the cell tower located on school property. School board president Kit Oase has said that tests done on the tower found it was operating normally within safety standards. Many parents disagree. Monica Ferrulli is one of those parents who has done her own research. Her son Mason was diagnosed with brain cancer at the age of 10. She says a doctor has confirmed that the cause of his cancer is “environmental.” Parents are claiming that the testing done by the school utilized a company (Hammett) hired by Sprint, the owner of the cell tower. So the parents reportedly hired their own independent company, Windheim, to conduct testing, and they provided handouts at the City Council meeting that is reportedly the result of the testing. Kaiser Health Blows the Whistle on FDA and Medical Device Fraud

Last year (2018) Netflix produced a documentary about corruption in the medical device industry, which is a 300 BILLION dollar a year industry worldwide. Industry insiders boast that the medical device industry has more power than Big Pharma, and is more powerful than most governments around the world. Earlier this month (March, 2019), Kaiser Health News published an investigation into the FDA and their public database that tracks medical device failures. Their investigation found that the FDA maintains a hidden database that records malfunctions of medical devices that is not available to the public. Dr. Douglas Kwazneski was helping a Pittsburgh surgeon remove an appendix when something jarring happened. The surgical stapler meant to cut and seal the tissue around the appendix locked up. Kwazneski later turned to the Food and Drug Administration’s public database that tracks medical device failures and “there was nothing,” he said. Yet when he surveyed leading surgeons on the matter, he discovered that more than two-thirds had experienced a stapler malfunction, or knew a peer who did. Such failures can have deadly consequences. Kwazneski had no idea the FDA had quietly granted the makers of surgical staplers a special “exemption” allowing them to file reports of malfunctions in a database hidden from doctors and from public view. “I don’t want to sound overdramatic here, but it seemed like a cover-up,” said Kwazneski.

We Can No Longer Rely on USDA Organic Standards

The USDA’s organics program has been taken over by corporate interests; it’s time to fight back. Consumers looking for clean, healthy food have for years turned to foods with the USDA’s organic seal. This seal is understood to mean that the food has been grown in accordance with organic principles—most importantly, that the farming practices promote healthy soil, which in turn produces healthy food. Unfortunately, corporate influence has infected the USDA’s organic program to such an extent that it can be difficult to trust the organic seal. Concentrated animal feeding operations (CAFOs) have taken over organic eggs and dairy. According to organic standards, livestock are supposed to have access to the outdoors, fresh air, and sunlight. But these provisions have been interpreted in such a way as to allow CAFOs to confine animals to barns but add “porches”—a roof built over a concrete floor with screens as walls—and still label their livestock as “organic.” This allows CAFOs to continue to raise millions of chickens or livestock on the cheap in cramped, squalid conditions but charge the organic premium. The USDA estimates that half of all organic eggs come from CAFOs.

Police Break Down Door of Arizona Family at 1 AM to Medically Kidnap 3 Children Because Parents Refused to Take Child to Emergency Room with Fever

Local news media in Arizona have reported that a family had their three children forcibly removed from their home in the early morning hours after armed police forces broke down their door to gain entrance. The military SWAT-like actions of these armed police forces were captured on video by the family's security cameras. The incident is reportedly the result of the family's doctor reporting them to child services because they did not follow her advice and take their 2-year-old son to the emergency room due to a high fever. The parents claim the child's fever came down considerably on the way, and that he started playing with his siblings. They offered to bring him back to the doctor to verify he was not in danger, instead of spending thousands of dollars for an emergency room visit, but the doctor allegedly refused and reported them to social services. If local authorities truly believed the child was in imminent danger, why did they wait until the middle of the night when the entire family was asleep to break down their door and come in and raid their home, traumatizing the children and taking all three of them into custody? The parents do not even know where their children are located, and social services reportedly canceled their meeting.

Judge in Monsanto Roundup Trial is Already Hindering Testimony

A high-stakes federal trial kicked off in California involving a man diagnosed with non-Hodgkin lymphoma who is seeking compensation from Monsanto/Bayer because, he claims, its weedkiller Roundup caused his cancer. Even before the trial started, the judge’s behaviour was already making waves, prompting Robert Howard to write [an] article, warning that Judge Vincent Chhabria was “already hindering testimony”. Howard was one of the jurors who back in August of last year, at the culmination of the first case brought against Monsanto – a state rather than a federal case – ordered the company to pay $289 million in damages for having acted with “malice” in hiding the dangers of Roundup. Howard, however, probably never guessed the degree to which Judge Chhabria would hinder testimony once the actual trial got underway, leading to the Guardian headline Monsanto: judge threatens to 'shut down' cancer patient's lawyer.

However, new research from public health groups and scientists from the past several years indicates that food and drinks are contaminated with glyphosate, the main ingredient in the weed killer Roundup. U.S. Government: DNA Collected from Newborn Dried Blood Spots No Longer Protected From Being Used in Human Research

The Office for Human Research Protections at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services used a Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) to issue a notice on federally funded research using newborn dried blood spots taken by states for genetic testing at birth. Citizens’ Council for Health Freedom (CCHF) first discovered long-term state warehousing of newborn DNA in 2003 and has been educating Americans on the fact that some states store and use newborn blood spots without parental consent. CCHF has actively engaged parents to protect their newborn baby’s DNA and genetic privacy rights. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services gave notice that newborn DNA will no longer be protected by parent consent requirements enacted in 2014. Newborns cannot protect themselves from genetic exploitation. Congress was right in 2014 to protect these newborn citizens from the taxpayer-funded genetic analysis, research and profiteering that were taking place, and will now take place again, without the consent of their parents. These dried blood spots, taken at birth as part of the state newborn genetic testing program in all 50 states, and stored indefinitely in some states, are prized for the DNA they hold. Texas has sold them and used them for barter. California sells them for about $20 to $40 per spot. Parents in Indiana, Michigan, Minnesota, and Texas have filed lawsuits, forcing several state health departments to destroy the newborn DNA blood spot cards they had stored for decades, and sometimes shared and used, without parent consent. The parent lawsuit in Minnesota went all the way to the state supreme court before the parents won. Congress should act now to restore the parent consent requirements that were in place for more than three years and the HHS Office for Human Research Protections have dismantled. The genetic privacy rights of the four million babies born in America every year are at stake.

BREAKING: FDA Sued as CDC Recommends Untested, Unlicensed Flu Vaccine for Pregnant Women

In response to a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) lawsuit, the FDA has admitted, for the first time, that government agencies, including the CDC, are recommending vaccines for pregnant women that have neither been licensed for pregnant mothers by the FDA nor tested for safety in clinical trials. The lawsuit, filed by Children’s Health Defense (CHD) attorney, Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. on behalf of Informed Consent Action Network (ICAN), a vaccine safety advocacy group, sought all clinical trial data used by FDA to approve influenza vaccines for pregnant women. The FDA’s terse reply: “We have no records responsive to your requests.” Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. says, “As a nation, we can no longer pretend our trusted agencies are protecting our children. It is time to hold federal agencies accountable.”

Washington State Battleground: Citizens Head to Capitol to Oppose Mandatory Vaccines

Thousands of people braved the cold weather and headed to the Washington State Capital last week (February, 2019) to voice their opposition to HB1638 which would restrict parental exemptions to childhood vaccines. Much like 2015 which saw many states try to pass legislation to make vaccines mandatory, the current reason being used to eliminate vaccine choice is an "outbreak" of measles in the State of Washington that has reportedly affected 50 people, with no deaths. Due to the fact that the corporate-sponsored "mainstream" media routinely censors anything negative associated with vaccines and simply republishes the pharmaceutical narrative that all vaccines are safe, many legal and medical experts showed up in Washington to educate lawmakers on the other side of the debate. New York University Law Professor Mary Holland spoke about the myth of "herd immunity" and how this theory is not a legal basis for forced vaccinations. Dr. Brian Hooker, PhD, also provided testimony. Dr. Hooker was the person that CDC whistle-blower Dr. William Thompson called in 2014 to reveal how the CDC withheld data linking the MMR vaccine to autism. After Lipitor’s patent expired at the end of 2011, the FDA issued its first warnings against statin drugs, which include: liver injury, memory loss, diabetes, and muscle damage, among others. Thousands of lawsuits against the maker of Lipitor followed. As we have reported many times over the years here at Health Impact News, the cholesterol theory of heart disease is not well-supported by science at all. In fact, much of the science states that cholesterol is an important part of our health, and contrary to popular belief, those with the highest levels of cholesterol actually live longer than those with lower levels of cholesterol in their blood. However, with such a large segment of the American population moving into their senior years, the pharmaceutical industry's attempt to keep seniors on cholesterol-lowering statin drugs continues unabated, and the largely pharma-funded corporate media is doing their part to silence doctors and other researchers who criticize the failed cholesterol theory of heart disease. Judge Rules Monsanto’s Attempts to Ghostwrite Studies and Influence Findings of Scientists and Regulators to be Allowed in Court

A federal judge overseeing lawsuits alleging Bayer AG's glyphosate-based Roundup weed killer causes cancer on Monday tentatively allowed pieces of controversial evidence that the company had hoped to exclude from upcoming trials. The company denies allegations that glyphosate causes cancer and says decades of independent studies have shown the chemical to be safe for human use. Chhabria on Monday said plaintiffs could introduce some evidence of Monsanto's alleged attempts to ghostwrite studies and influence the findings of scientists and regulators during the first phase of upcoming trials. He said documents which showed the company taking a position on the science or a study introduced during the first phase were "super relevant."

Arizona Lawmaker Wants to Mandate that Parents are Fully Informed of Vaccine Ingredients and Side Effects Before Children Receive Shots

The Arizona Daily Star is reporting that one Arizona lawmaker, State Senator Paul Boyer, is taking a different approach to "mandatory vaccine" policy. Instead of mandating that all children should be mandated to receive vaccines even over the objections of their parents, this lawmaker wants to instead mandate that parents are fully informed as to the ingredients in vaccines injected into their children, as well as the known side effects, so that they can make an informed choice. Howard Fischer of Capitol Media Service writes: "A state senator wants to mandate that parents be told exactly which ingredients and chemicals are in vaccines before their children are inoculated. The bill introduced by Sen. Paul Boyer, R-Phoenix, would require that any health professional provide not just the positive effects of vaccinations but also the full list of ingredients and side effects before a vaccine could be administered. He pointed to a list from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention that says vaccines may variously contain phosphate, bovine serum, formaldehyde, fluoride, yeast extracts or human diploid fibroblast cell cultures (cultures of human fetal tissue)."

French Court Cancels Monsanto Weedkiller Permit on Safety Grounds

A French court cancelled the licence for one of Monsanto’s glyphosate-based weedkillers on Tuesday over safety concerns, placing an immediate ban on Roundup Pro 360 in the latest legal blow to the Bayer-owned business. A court in Lyon in southeast France ruled that the approval granted by French environment agency ANSES in 2017 for Roundup Pro 360 had failed to take into account potential health risks.

Report: Costco to Stop Selling Glyphosate-based Roundup Weed Killer

Zen Honeycutt, the leader of Moms Across America, announced this week that Costco will not be selling the glyphosate-based weed killer Roundup Ready. In a live video update posted on Facebook, Honeycutt stated that she received word that Costco was no longer selling Roundup or glyphosate-based herbicides. While she has reportedly not received any official word yet from Costco, she stated that she has talked to various people at the headquarters and various regional offices to confirm this news. Honeycutt stated that based on the recent lawsuit against Monsanto in 2018, where a jury awarded damages to a man with terminal cancer resulting from exposure to glyphosate, Costco had decided to stop carrying the product. Moms Across America also sponsored a petition on Change.org that received over 89,000 signatures asking Costco, Lowes, and Home Depot to stop selling Roundup. It is hoped that Home Depot and Lowes will now follow Costco's example.
