If you have high cholesterol levels you should take a statin right? That is the mantra promoted by conventional medicine. Patients need access to compounded thyroid extract, not just the synthetic and incomplete version. A new clinical trial has found that hypothyroid patients prefer natural, full-spectrum desiccated thyroid extract (DTE) to T4-only preparations.There is a bill moving through Congress to outlaw certain compounded medications. This bill is a blatant move by pharmaceutical companies to eliminate the competition from compounding pharmacies and force people to buy the mass-marketed version of the drugs. That would mean that in the event of future shortages of DTE, people might be forced to switch to the T4-only preparations that leave so many patients with unresolved symptoms.
The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is warning that acetaminophen (Tylenol) products may cause three serious skin reactions, two of which typically require hospitalization and can be fatal. The most serious skin reactions linked to acetaminophen are Stevens-Johnson Syndrome (SJS) and Toxic Epidermal Necrolysis (TENS), both of which often start with flu-like symptoms and can cause the top layer of your skin to slough off, exposing you to a serious risk of fatal infections. The skin reactions can occur at any time after taking acetaminophen, even if you’ve taken the drugs with no issue in the past.

Each sample contained, on average, nine different pesticides and fungicides, although one contained 21 different chemicals. Recent clinical and laboratory research has determined that chamomile is not only relaxing, but it can significantly decrease anxiety and even fight depression. The most recent study, from the UK’s University of Nottingham Medical School, found that chamomile significantly relaxed blood vessels and smooth muscle fibers. This effect of chamomile to soothe and calm the system was also shown in a recent study from the Eulji University Hospital in South Korea. Here, 56 patients undergoing coronary treatment and surgery were given aromatherapy with a combination of lavender, chamomile and neroli. A control group was given only nursing care. The researchers found that the aromatherapy group had significantly lower anxiety and improved sleep compared to the control group.
State licensing boards are trying to prevent unlicensed citizens from even talking about certain subjects. As these state-sanctioned licensing boards continue to proliferate, the trend of limiting free speech is increasing—almost without exception as a tool for the board to protect the professional turf of licensed practitioners. In the 1950s, only one in twenty US workers needed government permission—for that is what licensure is—to pursue their chosen occupation. Today, it is closer to one in three. Yet there is little evidence that licensing protects public health and safety or improves products and services. It does, however, increase consumer costs and reduce opportunities for workers.
Oil pulling is an ancient Indian folk remedy used to improve dental health. One simply swishes a tablespoon of oil in one’s mouth for approximately 15-20 minutes on an empty stomach before spitting it out. Recent guidance from the FDA will place an impossible burden on farmers who raise true free-range chickens. The FDA guidance suggests that farmers must cover their outdoor pastures with either roofing or netting, or use noise cannons to scare away wild birds. Perhaps it has escaped FDA that noise cannons would also scare the chickens? Or that putting a roof over a multi-acre pasture is not only cost-prohibitive, but would prevent rain and sun from reaching the living things in the pasture? The FDA also advocates walls around the pasture, to prevent mice, rats, and cats from entering, and then put a roof over it. That’s right—walls and roofing. In other words, they want the chickens to be kept in a building! This completely contradicts what “free-range” is supposed to be about!
A meta-analysis of more than 208,000 people found that drinking two to four cups of caffeinated coffee daily was associated with a 50 percent reduced suicide risk among adults. Caffeine promotes production of the neurotransmitters serotonin, dopamine and noradrenaline. It also triggers the release of Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor (BDNF), which activates brain stem cells to convert into new neurons. Recent research also suggests that low BDNF levels may play a significant role in depression, and that increasing neurogenesis has an antidepressant effect, which may help account for the reduction in suicide risk.
Inhabitants of The Garden of Eden, a small Intentional Community based on Sustainability, were awakened by a SWAT raid conducted by the City of Arlington for suspicion of being a full fledged marijuana growth and trafficking operation. A young mother in Maine is being threatened by the Department of Health and Human Services to have her infant child taken away and put into foster care. Her crime? Feeding him goat’s milk instead of commercial infant formula.

Federal agents arrested the 48-year-old Oakland Township doctor at his Rochester Hills practice. McQuade says he’s charged with healthcare fraud for his role in a scheme to submit false claims to Medicare for treatments that were medically unnecessary. McQuade says the fraud scheme involves $35 million.
Federal officials are alleging an even worse crime than cheating Medicare — in their criminal complaint against Fata, FBI agents say “Dr. Fata directed the administration of unnecessary chemotherapy to patients in remission.”
The feds say he also deliberately misdiagnosed patients “as having cancer to justify unnecessary cancer treatment.”

In 1998, the FDA approved a new class of anti-inflammatory drugs called TNF-alpha blockers. The best-known drugs in this class are Enbrel and Humira, which are used to treat juvenile rheumatoid arthritis, Crohn’s disease, and other inflammatory diseases. But these drugs have dangerous side effects. In 2008, 2009, and 2011, the FDA determined that these drugs increase the risk of different—but all potentially fatal—infections and cancers, including tuberculosis and childhood leukemia. Despite all their well-documented dangers, as of 2013, TNF blockers remain on the market. The FDA has simply asked manufacturers of TNF blockers to let them know when someone got cancer—essentially taking a “wait and see” approach to a drug that has caused at least thirty-five deaths from cancer, at least fourteen deaths from Legionnaire’s Disease, and at least seven deaths from listeria infections. Over fifty people have died, and the FDA is still at the “information-gathering” stage.

Three years ago major concessions were won for small farmers, including an exemption for producers making less than $500,000 a year in sales who also sold most of their food locally. Now it’s all in danger. The FDA had proposed two troubling Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) rules that will drastically hurt small farms. The first one concerns standards for the growing and harvesting of raw agricultural produce, exempting foods that are sterilized by irradiation (even though “nuking” it harms the food’s nutritional value can cause a wide range of health problems). Obviously, organic foods cannot be irradiated, so they will never be exempted. The second amended the FDA’s Current Good Manufacturing Practices (CGMP) guidelines by creating hazards analysis requirements and risk-based protections with lots of detailed recordkeeping. Most farmers will likely need a team of lawyers to make sure they’re complying with the new rule properly. The new rules are written in vague language and geared to discriminate against small farmers and food producers who wish to diversify, as well as give the FDA the right to revoke the above exemption for small farms or facilities, even if there is no proof that the farm is the cause of the outbreak, and even though there may not be an immediate threat to public health!

A study just published in Food and Function, of the Royal Society of Chemistry, shows once again that the highest amounts of antioxidants in coconut oil are found in virgin coconut oils produced by the wet-milling process. The study was conducted in the Department of Biochemistry at the University of Kerala in India. The study compared a traditionally made virgin coconut oil with refined coconut oil, olive oil, and sunflower oil for effects on antioxidant status. The results revealed that virgin coconut oil improved the antioxidant status compared to other three oil-fed groups. They observed increased activities of catalase, superoxide dismutase, glutathione peroxidase and glutathione reductase in the liver, heart, and kidneys. Virgin coconut oil also prevented oxidative stress, indicated by the decreased formation of lipid peroxidation and protein oxidation. This is perhaps the most exhaustive study to date examining the anti-oxidant activities of traditional, wet-milled virgin coconut oils.

The Club des Chefs des Chefs, known as the world’s most exclusive gastronomic society, recently gathered in an Amish barn in Pennsylvania. In attendance were some of the world’s most renowned chefs including: the queen of England’s chef, chef to His Highness Prince Albert II, of Monaco, two chefs who serve Italian President Giorgio Napolitano, and President Obama’s chef Cristeta Comerford.
Among the local organic food that was served to these distinguished chefs by Amish farmer Leroy Miller, was raw milk. Did any of these chefs refuse the Amish raw milk? We don’t know, but I doubt it. These were chefs, not politicians. Unfortunately, however, locally-produced farm food has become a huge political issue in recent times.
Back in 2011 the Obama administration decided the FDA should prosecute Amish raw milk farmer Dan Allgyer in Pennsylvania, carrying out a sting operation against him and putting him out of business. His crime was supplying raw milk to a private food club a few miles away, but across the Pennsylvania state border. The incident prompted a demonstration in Washington D.C.
Will the major players in the industrial mass-produced and heavily subsidized food system that runs America allow direct access to farm-fresh food? The movement towards community sustainable agriculture and local foods is definitely an economic threat to the current system. But for at least one day, the chefs of the politicians who often protect the Industrial Food system gathered together in an Amish barn to enjoy REAL food!

When John Wrana was a young man, fit and strong and fighting in World War II with the U.S. Army Air Corps, did he ever think he’d end this way?
