What Type of Coconut Oil is Best? How to Choose a Coconut Oil

When we shipped the first "virgin coconut oil" from the Philippines into the U.S. back in 2001, there were only two other commercially available coconut oils being sold as edible oils in the U.S. market. Coconut oil was certainly not popular 13 years ago and there were few choices. If you were using coconut oil as dietary oil back then, chances are you were getting your information about fats and oils from Dr. Mary Enig. Many of her writings have been featured in the Weston A. Price Foundation over the years. Today, one has a plethora of choices when it comes to purchasing coconut oil. So what I am going to do in this article is give you an insider view of the current market, without mentioning any specific brands. Not all coconut oils are produced the same way and the type of coconut oil you purchase will depend on what you plan to do with it. But first, in order to make an intelligent decision about which coconut oil best suits your needs, you need to understand what is currently in the market, and how they differ.

Woman Writes Book on Mother’s Recovery from Alzheimer’s After Starting Coconut Oil

My book is called 'Thoughts of Yesterday.' The reason I gave my book this title is because when Mammy was at her worst with Alzheimer's, she could still remember her first day at school, but her thoughts of yesterday were gone. Her condition deteriorated quite rapidly, as we were advised it would. She had several periods of aggression which proved very difficult to manage and ultimately sedatives were prescribed to ease the symptoms. She had repeated kidney infections, one of which resulted in her being rushed to hospital by ambulance. Since taking the coconut oil, she has had NO periods of aggression whatsoever, and her kidney infections have become much less frequent. As a result of this, she has not had any sedatives over the last year, fewer antibiotics and also her blood pressure is perfect. Overall, her mood has much improved, she engages better in conversation and is very happy in herself. I have no doubt that if we had not found out about coconut oil, my mother would be in a home by now.

Coconut Oil is Beneficial for Your Heart: Shining the Truth on Mainstream Media’s Negative Attacks Against Coconut Oil

Coconut Oil has been a topic of news in the mainstream media again recently, so let's look at some of the misinformation that is still being spread about coconut oil. While Big Pharma is still claiming there are no "scientific studies" backing the health claims of coconut oil, they are investing in studies themselves to develop drugs that would mimic the natural healing properties of coconut oil.

The Coconut Oil Myths: Exposing Some Common Myths Surrounding Coconut Oil

Coconut Oil: The "New" Super-food? Coconut oil's popularity continues to increase here in 2014, and as a result it seems like everyone has something to say about it. Since we have been writing and publishing research about coconut oil for over 13 years, it is time to update our article on common myths surrounding coconut oil. First, coconut oil is NOT new! It has been a staple in the diets of millions of people for thousands of years. So when you read someone stating that coconut oil is some new fad, or that the information regarding its health benefits is all "hype", you are reading one of the many myths being spread around on the Internet by those who are seemingly too lazy to do some basic research, or type "coconut oil" into the search field at PubMed. While it is decreasing, bias against coconut oil is still prevalent today, and people will write from this bias without even investigating the historical uses of coconut oil, or the vast amount of research conducted on coconut oil, particularly the medium chain fatty acids it contains. But the myths being spread around the Internet are not simply from those who have a bias against it. Many people trying to jump on the coconut oil popularity bandwagon are also propagating some myths. So here is a look at some of the most common myths routinely found published on the Internet today:

New Alzheimer’s Drugs Continue to Fail Where Coconut Oil Shines

News here in 2014 is reporting that two more Alzheimer drugs have failed during drug trials. Alzheimer's Disease represents a huge market for pharmaceutical companies, as millions of people are suffering from the disease, and the rate is increasing rapidly. Many pharmaceutical companies are trying to develop Alzheimer's drugs and vaccines. However, if we are to truly understand the Alzheimer's epidemic, we need to stop viewing senior citizens as a lucrative market for pharmaceutical products. The most successful drug of all time, Lipitor, is a cholesterol-lowering drug aimed at seniors that at one time out sold all other drugs combined. It is estimated that today one out every four Americans over the age of 55 is now taking statin drugs to artificially lower their body's cholesterol. Unfortunately, there is research pointing to a lack of cholesterol uptake to the brain as being associated with Alzheimer's patients. Therefore, poor dietary advice and excessive pharmaceutical drugs must be considered as a primary cause of Alzheimer's Disease. All across the globe, people are starting to use coconut oil to treat Alzheimer's Disease, and the results have been nothing less than remarkable. In this report we take a look at some of these stories, as well as looking at research linking the high-fat ketogenic diet to curing many diseases such as Alzheimer's.

Deanna Protocol Offers Nutritional Program to Slow or Stop ALS (Lou Gehrig’s Disease)

The Deanna Protocol is gaining national attention as an alternative natural treatment to slow down or even stop the progression of Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), commonly known as "Lou Gehrig's disease." In the video below the physician who discovered this protocol gives his story. He is a retired surgeon, and when his daughter was diagnosed with ALS, he looked beyond the conventional medical system, which offered no hope, and turned to nutrition and natural methods instead. The protocol utilizes GABA and other supplements (see Table below), along with a ketogenic diet. The ketogenic diet is a high-fat low-carb diet that has been used to successfully treat many neuro-degenerative diseases, such as Alzheimer's, and it has been successfully used to treat epilepsy where drugs fail. We have reported much of the research regarding the ketogenic diet here at Health Impact News. The ketogenic diet is currently being studied in its effect on starving cancer cells. Coconut oil is an important component of a ketogenic diet, as it provides ketones due to the presence of medium chain fatty acids. We reported the story of "Clarence" back in 2012, who claims he actually reversed ALS by eating large amounts of coconut oil.

Teenage Daughter Cured of Mono with Coconut Oil in less than 1 Week

My teenage daughter had been sick for two weeks and not getting any better. Finally after several trips to the doctor she was diagnosed with mono (Mononucleosis). We were told there was nothing we could do and just wait it out as it could take weeks or months to clear up. I went online that night (Friday) and found testimonials regarding coconut oil. Went out the next day and bought some. By Monday she was feeling better. By Wednesday she felt almost normal. Friday we went to the doctors and had he re-tested. The mono was gone. They checked her spleen to make sure it wasn’t enlarged (a symptom of mono), and it was normal. She is a soccer player and was back out to practice by Monday. Truly an amazing turnaround.

Study: Coconut Oil Fatty Acids have Bactericidal and Anti-inflammatory Activities Against Acne

A study published in the Journal of Dermatological Science showed once again that coconut oil can be a powerful agent to use against acne. The study, conducted in Taiwan, compared the effects of two fatty acids found in coconut oil: lauric acid and capric acid. Both fatty acids are medium chain fatty acids. Lauric acid has an abundance of research available showing its strong antimicrobial activity, but less is known about the effects of capric acid on acne. The results of their study found that lauric acid had stronger antimicrobial activity, but that capric acid was effective also. This is good news for coconut oil users, as both fatty acids are found in coconut oil. Pure coconut oil is close to 50% lauric acid, and the only other place in nature where you can find high concentrations of lauric acid is human breast milk.
