The Telegram account of Don’t Speak News posted an amazing video today regarding the health benefits of reading out loud, instead of reading silently.

Trained as a linguist myself, I already knew much of what this video, produced by The Feynman Way, explains, but this video certainly enhanced my knowledge by leaps and bounds after watching it. Here is the YouTube description:

Discover why silent reading may be costing your brain two-thirds of its processing power — and what just 5 minutes of reading aloud does to memory, comprehension, and cognitive maintenance.

This video explores the production effect, triple memory encoding, and the neuroscience of speech circuits.

Learn why your own voice is a richer signal to your brain than anyone else’s, and find out how respiratory-linguistic coupling shifts your autonomic tone toward calm.

Whether you’re fascinated by the physics of the brain, curious about what silent reading really costs your memory, or looking for explanations that actually make sense about cognitive decline, this will change how you understand every page you read.

Watch now to see what nobody tells you about how your brain encodes language.

I have already experienced much of what this video teaches, living alone as a senior in my mid-60s. I have learned that I pick up more meaning out of my daily Bible studies by reading the passages out loud, for example.

I have also learned that with certain people whom I work with, written communication can be very inferior, and so for some people I communicate much more efficiently by voice, either by talking to them directly, or by using an app where we can exchange voice messages, as opposed to only text.

Recently, I have tried to overcome years of propaganda “brainwashing” which teaches that talking out loud while all alone is what “crazy” people do. For me, it is very helpful to speak out loud, and speak directly to God, my heavenly Father, and then when I am speaking out loud and use the first person plural, “we”, it helps focus my mind (which is my heart) to understand that I am referring to myself together with God.

When I just “talk” silently in my mind, I often find myself arguing with myself, as if I am talking to my “flesh”, my physical body, through my spirit.

Talking out loud and purposely directing my attention to God by talking to him throughout the day, helps me in my daily struggle against my sinful desires in the flesh, as is described by Paul in his letter to the Romans:

Those who live according to the sinful nature have their minds set on what that nature desires; but those who live in accordance with the Spirit have their minds set on what the Spirit desires.

The mind of sinful man is death, but the mind controlled by the Spirit is life and peace; the sinful mind is hostile to God. It does not submit to God’s law, nor can it do so.

Those controlled by the sinful nature cannot please God.

You, however, are controlled not by the sinful nature but by the Spirit, if the Spirit of God lives in you. And if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he does not belong to Christ.

But if Christ is in you, your body is dead because of sin, yet your spirit is alive because of righteousness. And if the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead is living in you, he who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through his Spirit, who lives in you. (Romans 8:5-11)

The other point to recognize in these linguistic truths that are explained in this video, is that human language, especially when spoken out loud which involves our tongue, mouth, throat, lungs, ears, etc., is far superior to “Artificial (fake) Intelligence” (AI), which can only read computer code.

AI can utilize more avenues of input than just written text, such as images through cameras, or sound through microphones, but ultimately those avenues of input have to be converted to text and computer code to run the algorithms, which is very inefficient when compared to human language.

There is a reason why computer language is called “artificial”, because it is a poor imitation of human language, which the human writers of computer code are trying to imitate.
