Bayer has been ordered to pay $2.1  billion in damages by a jury in the U.S. state of Georgia, because their product, which they inherited from Monsanto, the RoundUp herbicide with glyphosate, was determined to cause cancer in the plaintiff.

Bayer has already paid out $10 billion in other lawsuits where it was determined that glyphosate in RoundUp caused cancer, and there are still 60,000 cases pending.

Bayer hit with $2 billion Roundup verdict in US state of Georgia cancer case

BERLIN, March 22 (Reuters) – Bayer was ordered by a jury in the U.S. state of Georgia to pay about $2.1 billion to a plaintiff who claimed the company’s Roundup weed killer caused his cancer, the plaintiff’s law firms said late on Friday.

The verdict, which Bayer said on Saturday it would appeal, is one of the largest legal settlements issued in a Roundup-related case and is the latest setback for the group, among the world’s largest seeds and pesticides makers.

Bayer has paid about $10 billion to settle disputed claims that Roundup, based on the herbicide glyphosate, causes cancer. Over 60,000 further cases are pending for which the group has set aside $5.9 billion in legal provisions.

The German pharmaceutical and biotechnology group acquired Roundup as part of its $63 billion takeover of U.S. agrochemical company Monsanto in 2018.

The Georgia verdict includes $65 million in compensatory damages and $2 billion in punitive damages, according to a statement emailed to Reuters by the plaintiff’s law firms Arnold & Itkin LLP and Kline & Specter PC. (Source.)

Bayer has reportedly told members of Congress that they might stop selling RoundUp if they don’t give them legal immunity from these lawsuits, just like Big Pharma has done with vaccine injuries and deaths, due to the same threat that vaccine producers made to Congress in the 1980s, when they passed a bill and had Ronald Reagan sign it into law, the National Vaccine Injury Compensation Program, which still stands today and gives Big Pharma legal immunity for any injuries or deaths that their vaccines cause.

Without this legal protection, they threatened to stop producing vaccines back in the 1980s, because they could not survive in the market without it, as so many lawsuits were pending against them for vaccine injuries and deaths.

Bayer is now apparently making the same threat, because with all of these lawsuits, they cannot survive in the market.

Bayer tells US it could halt Roundup weedkiller sales over legal risks

FRANKFURT, March 7 (Reuters) – Bayer  has told U.S. lawmakers it could stop selling Roundup weedkiller unless they can strengthen legal protection against product liability litigation, according to a financial analyst and a person close to the matter.

Bayer has paid about $10 billion to settle disputed claims that Roundup, based on the herbicide glyphosate, causes cancer. About 67,000 further cases are pending for which the group has set aside $5.9 billion in legal provisions.

The German company has said plaintiffs should not be able to take Bayer to court by invoking U.S. state rules given the federal U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has repeatedly labelled the product as safe to use, as have regulators in other parts of the world.

“Without regulatory clarity (Bayer) will need to exit the business. Bayer have been clear with legislators and farmer groups on this,”

analysts at brokerage Jefferies said in a note on Thursday, citing guidance Bayer’s leadership provided in a meeting.

Bayer, which acquired Roundup under the $63 billion takeover of Monsanto in 2018, said: “We are exploring every possibility to end this litigation.” It declined to comment further.

Disclosing glyphosate sales numbers for the first time, Bayer on Wednesday said the product, one of the most widely used weedkillers in U.S. field farming, generated 2.6 billion euros ($2.8 billion) in revenue last year.

“Bayer could reach a point in the future where the company is forced to discontinue the sale of the product in the United States,”

a person familiar with the matter told Reuters, requesting anonmyity because of the sensitivity of the matter. (Source.)

If the herbicide glyphosate in RoundUp would no longer be available to Big Ag in the U.S., the U.S. would most certainly face starvation, as most of the corn and soybean crops in the U.S. are GMO, and dependent upon RoundUp to grow.

These two crops are also the main ingredients in ALL commercial animal feeds in the U.S.

It would literally take years to transition away from the U.S.’s dependence on GMO crops, and the use of the herbicide glyphosate.

Do you think the U.S. Congress will oblige, as they did in the 1980s when they gave Big Pharma legal immunity for deaths and injuries caused by vaccines?

Under Trump 2.0, they may not even have to, as Trump could just declare a “national emergency” and suspend all future lawsuits against Bayer, similar to what he did under his first term when he enacted the Prep ACT, which gave legal immunity for Pfizer, Moderna, and Johnson and Johnson for releasing experimental COVID-19 vaccines to the public, and any deaths or injuries that might occur.

In the meantime, support local small-scale producers in your community who are committed to producing food without the use of these dangerous pesticides and herbicides. More small farmers at the community level would get involved in producing food this way, if there is demand for it. But it costs more, as they do not receive subsidies from the U.S. Government to keep prices artificially low.
