Deodorants can be among the most toxic skin care products on the market. Commercial deodorants often contain toxic ingredients such as aluminum and parabens. Parabens are found in 99 percent of breast cancer tissues, for example. (See: 99 Percent of Breast Cancer Tissues Have Parabens From Cosmetics)
You can make your own non-toxic deodorant with virgin coconut oil and essential oils with my recipe below. This recipe is designed to fill a wide-mouth glass jar, so that you can use your fingers to apply. Many commercial deodorants are “roll-ons,” which means you are reapplying toxins from your sweat back into your armpits each time you use it. With the paste-like consistency of this recipe, you can use your clean fingers to apply under each arm.
By using virgin coconut oil and pure essential oils, you are putting healthy antioxidants and plant extracts into your skin.
- 3 Tablespoons Virgin Coconut Oil (should be a hard solid – not liquid)
- 3 Tablespoons organic tapioca starch
- 2 Tablespoons baking soda
- 17 drops of pure organic essential oils
Procedure:
Prepare 4 oz. glass jar with wide mouth.
In a small ceramic bowl, mix virgin coconut oil, tapioca starch, and baking soda. Blend well until the texture becomes smooth.
Add essential oils. Blend well.
Transfer the mixture to a 4 oz. glass container.
Directions: clean hands prior to applying with soap and water. Use one or two fingers on your right hand to apply to left underarm, and one or two fingers from your left hand to apply to your right underarm. Massage mixture thoroughly into the skin.

About the author: Unlike many people who write about coconut oil by simply reading about it, Brian Shilhavy actually lived in a coconut producing area of the Philippines for several years with his family, observing firsthand the differences between the diet and health of the younger generation and those of his wife’s parents’ generation still consuming a traditional diet. This led to years of studying Philippine nutrition and dietary patterns first hand while living in a rural farming community in the Philippines. Brian is the author of the best-selling book: Virgin Coconut Oil: How it has changed people’s lives and how it can change yours!
