It’s the New Year, a time when many of us feel motivated to get fitter and healthier. I’ve noticed that there are television adverts currently doing the rounds encouraging us to eat cholesterol-reducing foods. As I’ve written before, there really is no good evidence that taking dietary steps to reduce cholesterol offers broad health benefits.

The idea that cholesterol reduction is good for us is, to at least some degree, based on studies which find higher levels of cholesterol to be associated with enhanced risk of heart disease. However, it is worth bearing in mind that, in the elderly, some studies suggest higher cholesterol levels are associated with enhanced health and longevity. And also, low levels of cholesterol are associated with an enhanced risk of some conditions, notably cancer and ‘haemorrhagic stroke’ (stroke caused by bleeding blood vessels).
