A recent report from the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI), in the US, recommends that all children aged 9-11 should be screened for raised cholesterol levels. The report recommended that this should be repeated at age 17-21 too. Last month, the Journal of the American Medical Association published a critique of these recommendations, written by Dr Bruce Psaty and Dr Frederick Rivara from the University of Washington in Seattle, US.

Should it be suggested that your child is tested for cholesterol and perhaps treated I recommend asking the following question: “What evidence is there that this will benefit my child?” It’s a rhetorical question, of course, because there is no evidence.
