Melanie Warner has written a good article on bnet.com chronicling the difficulties senators from Alaska and other salmon producing states are having in battling the approval of genetically engineered salmon that many label as “frankenfish.” Warner states that “the FDA appears to be hellbent on providing U.S. consumers with their first GE food animal, and could announce approval within the next few months.” Warner also cites information from Food and Water Watch stating that government scientists who actually are marine life experts have been largely frozen out of the approval process, and that officials at the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration have expressed concerns that transgenic salmon would threaten and adversely affect wild Atlantic salmon, which are currently on the Endangered Species List.
