Healing oil

» What it does: Plantain and yarrow stop bleeding and soothe pain, while marigold (calendula) and lavender flowers reduce inflammation, prevent infection and promote healing.

» Ingredients: 5 1/2 ounces each yarrow leaves and flowers, marigold (calendula) petals, lavender flowers, plantain leaves; 9 ounces virgin coconut oil, warmed.

» How to make: Wash and pat dry enough fresh herbs to fill glass jar; pour warmed coconut oil into jar until it covers herbs; screw lid on tightly; place jar in sun for 3 weeks, shaking occasionally; strain oil through fine mesh sieve or clean muslin cloth into bottles. Apply 3 to 6 times daily or as needed.

Fiery gargle

» What it does: Gargling with sage eases a sore throat and helps stop infection; cayenne also relieves soreness and pain.

» Ingredients: 4 teaspoons fresh or 2 teaspoons dried sage leaves; small slice cayenne pepper or pinch dried chili powder; pinch sea salt; 7 ounces boiling water; 2 tablespoons each honey and apple cider vinegar.

» How to make/use: Place sage and cayenne in a jug; pour boiling water over them. Cover and leave to infuse for 10 to 15 minutes; add pinch of salt, which helps fight off infection. Add the cider vinegar and honey and stir well. Gargle with half a cupful 3 to 6 times a day or use mixture in a throat spray.
