Cholesterol is transported in the bloodstream in two principle forms: LDL-cholesterol (LDL) and HDL-cholesterol (HDL). LDL is said to be the form of cholesterol responsible for depositing on the inside of the arteries and is therefore often dubbed ‘bad’ cholesterol. HDL cholesterol, on the other hand, is said to be responsible for clearing cholesterol from the inside of arteries and is therefore often termed ‘good’ cholesterol.
While these ideas are generally firmly established in people’s minds, the relevance of LDL and HDL levels is not always as we’re led to believe.
