You may think it’s an innocent little tablet and you probably have a few lying around in your medicine cabinet… just in case you have a headache or need to ease a sports-related injury or perhaps even arthritis pain.

I’m talking about non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), like ibuprofen, naproxen and fenoprofen. However, if you have previously suffered a heart attack, you may want to think twice before you swallow one of these popular painkillers… even more so if you are taking a prescription dosage!

Danish researchers at the Copenhagen University, found that heart attack survivors taking prescription doses of NSAIDs were 45 per cent more likely to suffer a second attack within a week, compared to those taking none. More worryingly, they also found that patients receiving diclofenac (a very potent NSAID), were three times more likely to suffer another heart attack within a week of the first.
