A couple of weeks ago my blog post featured some research which found no association between total cholesterol levels and heart disease in a huge sample of individuals living in England. Moreover, this research found that higher levels of cholesterol were associated with a reduced risk of death due to stroke. Taken as a whole, these results suggest that higher cholesterol levels might not be such a big cause for concern after all, and may in fact signal enhanced health and relative protection from disease.

Firstly, rather than focusing on heart disease or any other single condition, it makes better sense to assess the relationship between cholesterol and overall risk of death. Secondly, when we look at this, we see from this study no evidence that ‘raised’ cholesterol poses broad health hazards, and in fact may signal better health and enhanced survival.
