DELAWARE TWP. — Senior citizen John Kotulich of Readington Township says he’s enjoyed raw milk since childhood with no ill effect. “I drink it every day!” he shared at a presentation yesterday that was organized by resident Jack Gaskill to spread the word about the effort underway to legalize sales in New Jersey of milk that hasn’t been pasteurized or homogenized.

Speaker Joseph Heckman, a Rutgers University professor, admitted that he does the same. “I guess I’m a criminal when I go to Pennsylvania and get my raw milk and bring it back to New Jersey,” he told about 30 people in attendance.

The state Assembly has approved a bill allowing raw milk sales in the Garden State but a bill has stalled in Senate subcommittee, amid fears that unpasteurized milk could sicken or kill consumers.

Advocates point out that no food is completely safe – food poisoning outbreaks have been linked in recent years to fresh produce, eggs, fish and meat – and feel that consumers should be allowed to weigh the risks and make their own decisions about what they eat.
