Those in alternative health circles have long known that WebMD is controlled by pharmaceutical companies. For possibly the first time, a writer for one of the mainstream newspapers (NY Times) exposes the same thing, and recommends the Mayo Clinic website as a more reliable source of information. Virginia Hefferman writes about how WebMD preys upon people’s fears and leads them to want to purchase drugs as the answer to their problems.
