If you conduct an internet search on the term Superfoods you’re bound to find a plethora of lists that will provide you between 10 to 20 ‘must eat’ items.  If you narrow the lists to fruits, you’re bound to find blueberries, kiwis, cranberries, acai, amalaki, apples and pomegranates.  Bananas, despite their worldwide popularity, never appear on any of the lists of nutritional all-stars.  There are very good reasons for consuming this often overlooked fruit.

Bananas are one of the most popular fruits in the world.  They are they dominate the international trade market for fruit and rank second to citrus fruits in value.  Banana is the common name for herbaceous plants of the genus Musa (Musaceae family).  Although there are 50 species of Musa, the two most popular are the banana and plantain.  Bananas vary in size and colors (yellow, purple, and red).  The Cavendish banana (yellow skin) or ‘traditional banana’ is the most popular member of the Musa family.  They are widely available and very affordable (roughly 30 to 40 cents per pound).
