Healthy Traditions has announced that it has added Glyphosate-Tested Heirloom Turkey Hard Red Winter Wheat to its network of GMO-tested and Glyphosate-tested food.
Turkey Hard Red Winter Wheat is an heirloom variety of wheat first brought to America in the 1870s by Mennonites immigrating from Russia. Once the predominant wheat of Kansas, it was eventually replaced with modern higher-yielding varieties of wheat by the 1940s. It is quite rare today, not used in commercial agriculture, but mostly grown by small-scale family farmers.
Turkey Red Wheat has a unique, rich, and complex flavor that is said to be missing from most modern varieties of wheat. It has excellent flavor, excellent baking qualities , and good quality protein. Learn more about the history of Turkey Hard Red Winter Wheat here.
The Healthy Traditions Turkey Red Wheat is grown in the rural areas of western Wisconsin using sustainable agricultural methods. In addition to being GMO-tested and Glyphosate-tested, it carries the highest Healthy Traditions rating of “Traditionally Produced.”
The milled flour is shipped to customers directly from farmers who mill it fresh prior to shipping. Both whole wheat and sprouted whole wheat flours are offered, as well as the wheat berries that can be milled in one’s home with a home grain mill.
