Excerpts:

As people age, they can find themselves becoming increasingly forgetful and absent-minded. Some will end up being affected by Alzheimer’s disease or some other form of dementia. I often find that my patients believe that there is quite a lot they can do to maintain and even improve the functioning of their body, but at the same time believe their brain is less amenable to lifestyle change and other approaches. However, I’ve learned from experience that often much can be done to improve brain function.

One factor that I’ve realised is worth considering is whether or not an individual is taking a cholesterol-lowering statin drug. While these drugs are well known for their ability to cause side effects such as muscle pain and weakness, their potential effects on the brain are less well-recognised. There are, however, many anecdotal reports from individuals who have experienced problems with memory and other mental functions following the use of statins. The long and short of it is that there is good reason to believe that depleting the brain of cholesterol may impair its function for some. And we have to wonder whether statins might be playing a significant role in the increasing rates of dementia and Alzheimer’s disease we’ve seen in recent years.
