Wisconsin Pediatric Group Starts Mobile Clinic to Vaccinate Infants at Home

With the nation now suffering under lock downs due to the coronavirus situation, fewer parents are bringing their children into clinics for routine check ups where vaccines are usually administered.

One clinic in Wisconsin has found a solution that might become more common place in the not-too-distant future.

They created a mobile clinic and are driving directly to people’s homes to administer vaccines.

To make sure children are still receiving essential vaccines during the COVID-19 pandemic, Lake Country Pediatrics is trying something new.

The clinic, which has locations in Delafield and Oconomowoc, will now go to patients’ driveways via a mobile medical clinic.

As they considered options for how to operate during the pandemic, pediatrician Gregory Moyer and his staff wanted to do home visits, but while some insurance companies would allow it, Moyer said the bulk of the companies required Lake Country Pediatrics to do prior authorization for each appointment.

“It would take 15 to 30 days to get approved or denied,” Moyer said. “We were brainstorming and said, ‘If we have a mobile medical clinic that is a direct extension to the office, you could just bill it as an office visit, and we could go to them.”

The clinic purchased a medical transport van and made modifications to the vehicle, including seats, an exam table and a refrigerator for vaccines.

Moyer said the van will serve children who are 2 months to 2 years old.
