The Spiritual Seed of God Overcomes Bloodlines

Modern day Western culture, post Darwin, exalts the physical side of mankind, while almost completely ignoring the spiritual side.

Every person alive today has both a physical body, and a spirit which gives life to the physical body.

The LORD God formed the man from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living being. (Genesis 2:7)

The human spirit is different from the spirits of other created beings, and is what makes us “human”.

God, the creator of heaven and earth, is pure spirit. His spirit is often referred to in the Bible as the “Holy Spirit.”

When a new human being is born, that child inherits the human spirit from their parents.

The one exception was the promised Messiah, Jesus Christ, who had no earthly human father, and was born from a virgin woman. He was the first human being ever born from both the human spirit, and the spirit of God.

The apostle John, who was the closest to Jesus during his earthly ministry, is the one who has written most extensively about the spirit of God entering into the human race.

This is what he wrote in Chapter 1 of his Gospel:

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

He was with God in the beginning. Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made.

In him was life, and that life was the light of men. The light shines in the darkness, but the darkness has not overcome it.

There came a man who was sent from God; his name was John. He came as a witness to testify concerning that light, so that through him all men might believe.

He himself was not the light; he came only as a witness to the light.

The true light that gives light to every man was coming into the world. He was in the world, and though the world was made through him, the world did not recognize him.

He came to that which was his own, but his own did not receive him.

Yet to all who received him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God—children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband’s will, but born of God. (John 1:1-13)

John wrote extensively about the spiritual rebirth, and how one could become “born again” through the spirit of God. Many Christians today, particularly Evangelical Christians, like to talk about being “born again”, and a survey done in the United States a few years ago found that almost 50% of the population of the United States believe they are “born again.”

That fact alone should alert people that most Americans truly do not understand what “born again” means as defined by the Biblical texts, and especially the writings of the apostle John.

Most Christians will start with John Chapter 3 and the conversation that Jesus had with a Pharisee named Nicodemus about this topic, but this concept of being born of God starts first here, in Chapter 1.

One way to define what something is, is to point out what it is not, which is what John does in the 13th verse of Chapter 1:

children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband’s will, but born of God. (John 1:13)

The first word used here by John, which in this particular English translation of the Bible is translated as “natural descent”, is in the Greek literally “blood”, in the plural: BLOODS.

Even the older English translations, such as the KJV, only uses blood in the singular:

Which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God. (John 1:13 – KJV)

The Greek word is αἷμα (aima), which Thayer’s Greek dictionary defines:

1) blood

1a) of man or animals

1b) refers to the seat of life

1c) of those things that resemble blood, grape juice

2) blood shed, to be shed by violence, slay, murder

In his writings in the New Testament, the apostle John very frequently distinguished between the “Godly Jews” and the “Satanic Jews”, particularly in Chapter 8, showing how the Jews who claimed to be descendants of Abraham had no special privileges just because they came from the same “family tree.”

So when he chose to use “blood” here in Chapter 1 in the plural, he is clearly including every single human family tree, or “bloodlines”, and how none of them matter when it comes to being “born of God.”

To be “born of God,” is to be implanted with the spiritual seed of God into our lives.

This is what John wrote in his first letter, 1 John:

No one who is born of God will continue to sin, because God’s seed remains in him; he cannot go on sinning, because he has been born of God. (1 John 3:9)

The Greek word for “seed” here is σπέρμα (sperma).

This word is used 44 times in the New Testament. However, depending upon what English translation of the Bible you use, the English word “seed” is only used about half the time, and mainly when referring to actual, physical seeds, such as the seeds of plants.

A good example is Matthew Chapter 13, where sperma is used 5 times and translated into English as “seed”  in three different parables that Jesus told:

Jesus told them another parable:

“The kingdom of heaven is like a man who sowed good seed in his field. But while everyone was sleeping, his enemy came and sowed weeds among the wheat, and went away.

When the wheat sprouted and formed heads, then the weeds also appeared.

The owner’s servants came to him and said, ‘Sir, didn’t you sow good seed in your field? Where then did the weeds come from?’ ”

‘An enemy did this,’ he replied.

The servants asked him, ‘Do you want us to go and pull them up?’

‘No,’ he answered, ‘because while you are pulling the weeds, you may root up the wheat with them. Let both grow together until the harvest. At that time I will tell the harvesters:

First collect the weeds and tie them in bundles to be burned; then gather the wheat and bring it into my barn.'”

He told them another parable:

“The kingdom of heaven is like a mustard seed, which a man took and planted in his field.

Though it is the smallest of all your seeds, yet when it grows, it is the largest of garden plants and becomes a tree, so that the birds of the air come and perch in its branches.”

He told them still another parable:

“The kingdom of heaven is like yeast that a woman took and mixed into a large amount of flour until it worked all through the dough.”

Jesus spoke all these things to the crowd in parables; he did not say anything to them without using a parable.

So was fulfilled what was spoken through the prophet:

“I will open my mouth in parables, I will utter things hidden since the creation of the world.”

Then he left the crowd and went into the house.

His disciples came to him and said,

“Explain to us the parable of the weeds in the field.”

He answered, “The one who sowed the good seed is the Son of Man. The field is the world, and the good seed stands for the sons of the kingdom.

The weeds are the sons of the evil one, and the enemy who sows them is the devil.

The harvest is the end of the age, and the harvesters are angels. As the weeds are pulled up and burned in the fire, so it will be at the end of the age.

The Son of Man will send out his angels, and they will weed out of his kingdom everything that causes sin and all who do evil.

They will throw them into the fiery furnace, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth. Then the righteous will shine like the sun in the kingdom of their Father. He who has ears, let him hear. (Matthew 13:31-43)

The other English word that is used most often to translate sperma is “descendant”, usually the “descendant” of Abraham, referring to his physical family tree.

Some examples:

They answered him, “We are Abraham’s descendants and have never been slaves of anyone. How can you say that we shall be set free?” (John 8:33)

I know you are Abraham’s descendants. Yet you are ready to kill me, because you have no room for my word. (John 8:37)

concerning His Son, who was born of a descendant of David according to the flesh, (Romans 1:3)

nor are they all children because they are Abraham’s descendants, but: “THROUGH ISAAC YOUR DESCENDANTS SHALL BE NAMED.”

That is, it is not the children of the flesh who are children of God, but the children of the promise are regarded as descendants. (Romans 9:7-8)

“Descendants” is the same word in the Greek, sperma, which means “seed.”

Two Kinds of “Seed” – Physical and Spiritual

We can see, therefore, that Abraham had two kinds of seeds/descendants: physical seeds according to his family bloodline, and spiritual seeds through the spiritual rebirth that Jesus offers through faith in him.

For all of you who were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ. There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is neither male nor female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus.

And if you belong to Christ, then you are Abraham’s descendants, heirs according to promise. (Galatians 3:27-29)

Family bloodlines have no value in the Kingdom of God, not even Abraham’s bloodline.

And while many Christians today understand that, they just claim that they are “born again” so that they can be included in all the promises that were given to Abraham, and fulfilled in Jesus Christ.

But what comes out of a person’s mouth in terms of what they claim, is not what counts in the end. Because everyone can lie equally, and even lie to themselves about who they think they are.

No, John made it very clear as to who the children of God are who have received his spiritual seed and how we can recognize them:

How great is the love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are!

The reason the world does not know us is that it did not know him.

Dear friends, now we are children of God, and what we will be has not yet been made known. But we know that when he appears, we shall be like him, for we shall see him as he is.

Everyone who has this hope in him purifies himself, just as he is pure.

Everyone who sins breaks the law; in fact, sin is lawlessness.

But you know that he appeared so that he might take away our sins. And in him is no sin. No one who lives in him keeps on sinning. No one who continues to sin has either seen him or known him.

Dear children, do not let anyone lead you astray. He who does what is right is righteous, just as he is righteous.

He who does what is sinful is of the devil, because the devil has been sinning from the beginning. The reason the Son of God appeared was to destroy the devil’s work.

No one who is born of God will continue to sin, because God’s seed remains in him; he cannot go on sinning, because he has been born of God.

This is how we know who the children of God are and who the children of the devil are: Anyone who does not do what is right is not a child of God; nor is anyone who does not love his brother. (1 John 3:1-10)
