In many countries, adults are urged to have their cholesterol levels regularly checked, and then take appropriate action in the form of lifestyle changes and/or medication if their levels are found to be higher than set guidelines.

In recent times, recommendations regarding cholesterol screening have been extended to children too. Back in November 2011, a panel of experts convened by the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute (NHLBI) in the US recommended that all children aged 9-11 should have their cholesterol levels checked, and that more targeted testing (in those deemed to be at high risk) should be used in 2-8 year-olds and 12-16 year olds.
